Leading with Cutting-Edge Research, Empowering Change Through Knowledge – UC City Research Impact Report

University of California, City College (UC City) has risen to the ranks of America’s top public research universities through unwavering research accumulation and innovative breakthroughs. Guided by the core philosophy of "problem-oriented research," we have reshaped the development paradigm of modern public research institutions. In 2024, UC City officially joined the Association of American Universities (AAU), standing alongside the nation’s leading research universities. This milestone achievement is not only authoritative recognition of our research strength but also high affirmation of our mission to "make research benefit the public."

As a global leader spanning basic research and applied innovation, UC City has always adhered to the original aspiration of "building a more inclusive and sustainable future" in its research endeavors. In the U.S. News & World Report global rankings, our research in urban sustainability ranks 18th worldwide, and our smart city technology sector is among the top 30 globally. In the field of public health and community health intervention, we have gained international attention through a series of groundbreaking achievements. We house North America’s largest urban climate simulation laboratory, and our low-altitude pollution monitoring system has been adopted by 12 cities in California. Our independently developed intelligent community elderly care service platform has directly benefited over 50,000 seniors – at UC City, we never settle for "answering known questions" but strive to "solve unaddressed people’s livelihood challenges."

This research strength has long been transformed into tangible social value and economic momentum. According to calculations by independent institutions, UC City contributes over $3.2 billion to the U.S. economy annually, with $2.3 billion directly driving regional economic growth in California and creating nearly 18,000 jobs. The "Urban Innovation Transformation Alliance" initiated by us has connected more than 150 local enterprises, global tech giants, and startup teams. Over the past three years, 87 laboratory achievements have been successfully transformed into market products: from degradable urban infrastructure materials to digital medical tools for vulnerable groups, from intelligent traffic dispatching systems to adolescent mental health intervention programs. UC City’s research is integrating into every corner of urban operation in a "visible and tangible" way.

ollaborative Symbiosis: The Core Code of UC City’s Research

UC City’s research impact is rooted in its deep-seated "collaborative gene." We have broken down traditional disciplinary barriers and taken the lead in establishing "Cross-Domain Research Centers" nationwide. We promote environmental scientists and computer engineers to jointly tackle climate simulation models, invite public health experts and urban planners to co-design healthy community blueprints, and collaborate with legal scholars and data analysts to solve algorithmic bias issues. This collaborative model "beyond the walls of laboratories" enables bottlenecks that are difficult to break through in a single field to be resolved through the collision of diverse perspectives.

This collaborative spirit is nurturing the power to change the world: the "community screening tool for early Alzheimer’s disease" developed by our interdisciplinary team has reduced detection costs by 70% and achieved full coverage in rural areas of California; the "integrated rainwater purification and energy storage technology" pioneered by the urban water recycling research team has provided a replicable water-saving solution for arid regions; the "personalized learning adaptation system" jointly created by the School of Education and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory has made classroom teaching in nearly a thousand primary and secondary schools more inclusive.

Authoritative Recognition: A Global Reputation Forged by Strength

UC City’s research standards have long been highly recognized by the global academic community. Our faculty team has won various top honors, from the Nobel Prize and Turing Award to the National Medal of Science. In the past five years alone, 12 scholars have been elected as members of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, or Medicine. In terms of research funding, UC City has topped the list of federal research funding among public universities in California for eight consecutive years. The annual grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Science Foundation (NSF) each exceed $400 million. Additionally, private donation programs such as the "Urban Future Innovation Fund" have injected momentum into cutting-edge exploration – among them, the $120 million "Young Scientists Initiative" established by alumni donations has supported 50 young scholars to make breakthroughs in niche and frontier fields.

Authoritative Recognition: A Global Reputation Forged by Strength
Based on global challenges and local demands, UC City focuses on three core areas to empower high-quality development through precise research:
Urban Sustainability and Climate Response: As a global benchmark in this field, we have built a full-chain research system of "monitoring-simulation-intervention." From developing new carbon capture materials to designing core sponge city technologies, from optimizing urban energy grids to protecting biodiversity, our research not only provides core technical support for California to achieve its 2045 carbon neutrality goal but also exports "green transformation solutions for high-density cities" to the world.
Public Health and Inclusive Medical Innovation: With the goal of "making health resources accessible to all," we have made breakthroughs in multiple areas such as chronic disease prevention, infectious disease control, elderly health, and mental health. In addition to the aforementioned Alzheimer’s screening tool, our independently developed "telemedicine chronic disease management platform" has covered community health centers in 20 counties in California, and the results of our multi-center research on long COVID have been included in the global clinical guidelines by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Intelligent Technology and Social Inclusion Innovation: Different from pure technological R&D, we pay more attention to "how technology serves people." From accessible interaction technologies that bridge the digital divide for people with disabilities to intelligent monitoring systems that prevent adolescent internet addiction, from AI dispatching solutions that optimize urban traffic to low-cost tools that assist small and medium-sized enterprises in digital transformation, our research has always adhered to the original aspiration of "technology for good," ensuring that innovative achievements benefit every group.

Full Participation: A Research Community from Undergraduates to Top Scholars

As a research university featuring "research-integrated education," UC City firmly believes that "research is not the patent of a few." We have created the "Zero-Distance Research Program" for undergraduates, where over 85% of junior students can enter top laboratories to participate in real projects: from assisting in analyzing urban air quality data to participating in clinical sample sorting and developing educational technology prototypes. The innovative vitality of undergraduates has brought constant surprises – last year, three undergraduate teams won national patents for their inventions. Our graduate programs focus on "interdisciplinary training," with more than 20 joint training bases co-established with institutions such as Google, Genentech, and Caltech, allowing graduate students to temper their research capabilities by solving practical problems.

Speak Up for Research: Your Support Creates More Possibilities

Today, UC City’s research undertakings are facing unprecedented opportunities and practical challenges: fluctuations in federal research funding have made it difficult to advance some cutting-edge projects; funding gaps for training young research talents may cause us to miss the next "inspiration that changes the world"; the need to upgrade large-scale research equipment is crucial to maintaining our leading position in global competition. Those green technologies related to the city’s future, life-saving medical breakthroughs, and educational innovations that empower equity all rely on stable support.

The phased restoration of NSF and NIH funding has given us hope, but long-term protection still requires joint efforts. As a backbone of public universities in California, every research breakthrough at UC City is linked to the well-being of thousands of families: it may be a monitoring technology that keeps your family away from pollution, a medical tool that protects the health of elders, or an intelligent system that allows children to receive equitable education.

We need your support – whether donating to the "Innovation Seed Fund" for young researchers, providing practical resources for student research projects, or sharing UC City’s research stories on social media, you can inject power into "knowledge changing the world."
